Sanjar first participated in the Jessup in 2018, as a member of UWED’s Jessup Team. He demonstrated outstanding skill by arguing the positions of both applicant and respondent, which led to his team winning the 2019 National Rounds. Later, he and his team represented Uzbekistan in the International Rounds in Washington D.C.

Why Jessup?

In the Jessup competition you have a unique chance to act out as a representative of, though imaginary, a certain country and argue the case before the judges the way you believe to be true. Apart from that, while participating in the Jessup, one will certainly hone his or her skills in oral advocacy, legal writing, legal analysis etc. Above all, what I really appreciate and highly value in the Jessup is the networking. Because The Jessup competition is one of those rare platforms where you meet wonderful people, meet your peers and become friends.

How has Jessup experience changed you?

While participating in the Jessup as a team member I learned to work in a group. For the person who is accustomed to working alone it was a quite good challenge in the beginning. However, the more we worked, the more united, the more unified we became. Furthermore, I became more easy-going, extroverted person than I used to be the years before 🙂

What was the most memorable moment of your participation in the Jessup?

The sleepless nights spent together with friends. The Jokes cracked that except us, no one could understand. The Flights where I really felt that we were one family. And of course, the rounds!

What advice would you give to the future generations of Jessup participants?

You should be ready to forgo the things that might distract you from Jessup. You may not be able to spend time with your friends whenever you want, you may sleep less than others, you may have to work harder than others but the end result will be worth your sacrifice. As for the teamwork, you have to learn to listen to your other team members, learn to believe in them and support them when there is a need to do so. Because the essence of the Jessup competition is the teamwork.
